Mrs. Elizabeth B. Raymond of Long Beach, California, formerly of Osceola, died recently in California. Funeral services were held Sunday at Long Beach. The body will be brought back to Osceola later.

Mrs. Raymond is the mother of Mrs. Charles T. Ayres, also formerly of this city, and is well known in the city. She was born in 1832 and was 97 years old at the time of her death. When a girl, she made the trip from Maine to Michigan in a canal boat and a horse car. Mrs. Raymond then came to Iowa in 1860 and shortly after came to Clarke County. She has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. C. T. Ayres, for a number of years.

Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Ayres formerly lived in Osceola, Mr. Ayres being engaged in business in the city. A few years ago, they moved to California. Mrs. Raymond was always a very active woman and interested in the things which make the world a more pleasant and better place to live. Many friends mourn the departure of this well loved pioneer.

90th Birthday…

It is indeed a long time from 1832 until the present. Born in Maine in 1832, Mrs. Raymond, whose maiden name was Kelley, moved with her family to Tecumseh, Michigan when she was but seven years old. They traveled by boat, presumably up the St. Lawrence River to the Great Lakes or perhaps they crossed New York on the then comparatively new Erie Canal. Mrs. Raymond does not recall which. Their city boasted a railroad even at that early date although the power was furnished by horses. One of her early recollections is of a time when one of the horses fell in such a manner that it broke its leg and men came and shot it.

In 1852 when she was 20 years of age, she was married to Daniel Raymond and at the close of the Civil war they moved to Iowa and settled at Eddyville, coming to Osceola shortly after. Mr. Raymond built a flour mill on the lot now occupied by W.J. Jemison and the family at once took up an active part in the affairs of the community.

In 1884 the mill burned and they moved to Huron, South Dakota, where another mill was built. Soon after, Mrs. Raymond’s brother, John Kelley, sold his lumber yard here and purchased the mill in Huron. The Raymonds moved to Kansas and in 1895 returned to Osceola. Four years later, Mr. Raymond died.
