James R. Harlan, well known to the older residents of Havelock as a minister of the Christian church and father of John H. Harlan, 533 South Fifteenth street, died at Missouri Valley, Iowa, Thursday, May 24, 1924, aged 90 years 9 months and 3 days. He was born in Indiana, August 20, 1833, and when a young man moved to Osceola, Iowa, with his parents, Aaron Harlan and Jemima Polly Harlan. He was one of a family of eight children, two of the children and the parents having preceded him to the beyond.

May 3, 1855, Mr. Harlan was united in marriage to Eliza J. Moore, to which union eight children were born. Isaac and Ellison died many years ago, and a daughter, Martha E. Jenkins, died April 18, 1924 at the age of 60 years.

The surviving children are Z.B. Harlan of Vilas, Colo.; Anna Shaline of Cleveland, Mo.’ W.A. Harlan of Omaha, S.B. Harlan of Missouri Valley and John H. of Havelock. Besides the children, two brothers and two sisters, twenty-one grandchildren and thirty-five great-grandchildren are left to mourn his demise. His wife died at Weeping Water, Nebr., May 27, 1900.

Mr. Harlan was converted to the Christian faith in young manhood and entered the ministry when about 25 years of age, continuing as a minister of the Disciples of Christ until his 80th year.

When the call came in the glow of the morning, Elder Harlan died as he had lived firmly and fearlessly believing that God reigns in the affairs of men and of nations and calmly took his way to that home in the great beyond.
