The startling news reached Osceola on Friday that Boyd Stiffler, of Murray, had been shot in Wisconsin, where he was with the hunting party that went out last week. On Sunday, his body, accompanied by Mr. Taylor, was received in Murray. The funeral was held with the very large audience that had gathered.

He was born in January 1866, in Guernsey county, Ohio. His funeral was in charge of the Knights of Pythias to which he belonged. Thirty of the St. John’s Lodge in Osceola attended. The sympathy for his family is universal, and the sad event has been felt throughout the whole community.

The circumstances, as far as known by Mr. Taylor, who accompanied the body home, were that being out with Mr. Cox as the only one of their party, they fell in with a man named Miller of another hunting party. It was dark. They had separated somewhat and the first Cox knew was, hearing a loud cry from Stiffler, he ran to him and found him dead, with a bullet wound entering at the top of his head and ranging down toward the back of his neck.
Miller said he took him for a deer and fired. He fled hearing the outcry Cox made at finding Stiffler was dead and went to the nearest town where he gave himself up to the authorities.

A coroner’s jury that investigated the case deemed it suspicious that no brush was found to be between them at the time of the shooting, and there are dark hints that this is not Miller’s first accident of the kind. But no matter. Boyd Stiffler is dead, and his death is an exceeding great loss, because he was a clean, good, young man, a great companion of his father, being the youngest son, and will be deeply mourned by his parents, and relatives.
