John Diehl was born in Preble county, Ohio, February 27, 1835, and died at his home in this city September 16, 1909, aged 74 years, 6 months and 19 days.

In his youth he learned the blacksmith’s trade and was married to Lydia A. Boole who died at the age of 24 years leaving one daughter, Mary.

He was again married in 1859 to Sarah A. Carnahan of Darke county, Ohio, and to this union, four children were born: Charles B., Minnie E., Della V., and John Richard died a few years ago and the others with their mother survive. They are C.B. of Stratton, Nebr., Mrs. W. L. Richardson of Elwell and Mrs. Frank Andrus of this city.

Mr. Diehl came to Clarke County in 1860 and located in section 4, Osceola township, where he lived until he moved to town eighteen years ago.

He enlisted in July, 1861, in Co F, 6th Iowa Inf. And served three years, part of the time as head blacksmith of the division. After his time expired he recruited a company of when he was made first lieutenant and later captain but the company did not see service.

He was a successful farmer and acquired a competence, retiring about eighteen years ago. Since that time he has lived in Osceola.
He was almost a half century as active member of the Christian church, joining at the time elder White held service in the old court house on the north side of the square.

The funeral services were held at the Christian church Sunday at 2:30 Elder Roberts being in charge. All the children and grandchildren and his only brother, J.F. Diehl of Nelson, Neb., were present. The only near relative not present was his sister, Mrs. Nannie Delbridge, of Morris, Ill.
