John White was born in North Carolina, December 19, 1819, and died at his home two miles northwest of Prairie Grove, Clarke county, Iowa, August 9, 1897, aged 77 years, seven months and twenty days. In the year 1867 he moved from his native state to Clarke county, Iowa, living in Madison township until his death. He was married to Mary C. Thrift, December 14, 1847. To this union was born six children, four of whom survive him. Mr. White was a devoted Christian, being a member of the Methodist church for 30 years, being faithful to his vows to God until he was called home to the Christian's reward. He was a man held in high esteem by all who knew him. A man of frugal habits, possessing good business qualities, being elected in his younger life as sheriff of his native county in North Carolina. All through his life he was a man of considerable influence in the community.

Funeral services were held at the Union M. P. church, August 10th at 11 a.m. The sermon preached by the writer from II Tim. 4.7.8. A large gathering of neighbors and friends were present and offered sympathy to the bereaved family. His remains were laid to rest in the Union cemetery and a number of grandchildren mourn his loss.
