Obituary.

Christopher Smith, of this city, died at his home Thursday June 17th, aged 48 years, two months, nine days. His disease was consumption.

Christopher Smith was born in Putnam county, New York, April 8th, 1838. In June 1840 his father removed with his family to Ohio where they lived till the fall of 1860, from which state they removed to Iowa settling in Clarke county.

Christopher was then twenty-two years of age. The family lived for a time in Washington township where in March of 1863, Christopher at the age of twenty-five years, was united in marriage to Sarah Denny of Madison township. After his marriage he, having previously served an apprenticeship to a blacksmith, engaged in blacksmithing and has since followed the business. In May 1867 Sarah died. In February 1869 he was again married to Mrs. Rhoda Craven, of Winterset, who died in July 1877. In June 1878 he was again married to Elizabeth Casey then residing in Afton.

He became a member of the M. E. church in his 20th year which constituted his first religious experience. In 1871 he united with the Second Day Adventist church of which he remained a member until his death. For some years he has been in business in this city. He was a hard working man, straightforward and honorable. He leaves a wife, four sons, two daughters, father and mother, four brothers and one sister.
