Mrs. Harriet Smith.

Harriet Smith was born in Mahoning county, Ohio, December 12, 1852 and departed this life at her home in Clarke county, Iowa, May 4, 1923, aged 71 years, 4 months and 22 days. September 17, 1873, she was united in marriage to Chester B. Smith in the state of Michigan. More than fifty years ago they settled on a farm in Liberty township, Clarke county, Iowa, where she has made her home until the death angel came. To this union were born seven daughters and one son. Six daughters and the husband preceded her to the world beyond. She is survived by Mr. Arthur E. Smith who resides on the homestead, and Mrs. Elsie Wilkins of Liberty township, together with two sisters and one brother, and sixteen grandchildren, besides a host of friends, many of whom have known her for years. During the winter of 1892, she with her husband united with the United Brethren church at Center church. She was faithful to her church vows, and gave evidence to the very last of an unwavering faith in Almighty God. Her illness lasted over a period of five months. The last seven weeks were serious, but amidst it all she was patient, saying she was ready and would welcome the time of her departure. "He is precious, so precious," were among her last words, requesting her remaining children to meet her in the land where there is no night and where there are no goodbyes.

Funeral services were conducted at Bethel Chapel by Dr. Wm. F. Cronk of Des Moines, assisted by Rev. H. P. Abbott of Woodburn, and the body laid to rest beside her husband.
