Jackson Burton Marquis

Jackson Burton Marquis, son of William and Lucy Marquis, was born in Clarke county, Iowa, October 6, 1862, and died after an illness of seven months at the home of his son, Garold, in Des Moines, Iowa, Sunday, June 14, 1953, at the age of 90 years, 8 months, and 8 days.

He was the last of the pioneer Marquis families that came from Ohio and settled in Clarke county near Bethel Chapel.

He was united in marriage to Irene Kilgore on December 25, 1888 and to this union were born 8 children, 5 girls and 3 boys. Mrs. Marquis passed away on April 17, 1917, also a daughter Ruth Heston on July 12, 1939 and a son Wade on November 6, 1913.

Marquis farmed for many years. In 1921 he was married to Mrs. Fannie Rhode of Decatur, Iowa, where he spent his later years.

He made his confession of faith when a young man and lived a true conscientious Christian life. He was a daily reader of the Bible and made it his guide through life.

He was a kind husband, a faithful father and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances.

Those surviving are his wife, 2 sons, Manning Marquis of Hollywood, Calif., and Garold Marquis of Des Moines; 4 daughters, Mrs. Beulah Feight of Des Moines, Mrs. Belva Sweeney of Creston, Mrs. Bernice Hertz of Fort Dodge and Mrs. Elsie Bethards of Garden Grove; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Grace Marquis of Des Moines, 2 step-sons; 18 living grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

Funeral service was held at the Webster Funeral Home Wednesday, June 17, 1953. Rev. Elmer Clark officiated and burial was in Bethel Chapel cemetery.
