Charles “Chub” Garrett, 81, of Osceola died May 28, 2013, at Clarke County Hospital.

Services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at Kale Funeral Home, 301 S. Main St. The Rev. Marty Burgus officiated. Interment with military rites presented by William-Lochrie American Legion Post No. 405 was in Murray Cemetery.

Charles Ray Garrett, son of Florence Ruth (Kirk) and Marion Garrett, was born Sept. 27, 1931, on a farm near Murray.

Charles attended rural schools near his home through the eighth grade. At the age of 15, Charles moved to Davenport and began working at Tanenbomb Grocery Store.

In 1949, at the age of 17, Charles enlisted in the United States Army and later completed his basic training May 13, 1949 at Camp Lee Virginia.

In 1950, Charles was deployed to Korea and served with Battery 555 Field Artillery Battalion. The unit engaged with North Korean forces in what became known as the Battle of Bloody Gulch. Charles continued to serve until he was honorably discharged Dec. 3, 1951.

Upon returning home to Murray, Charles married Joyce Joann German.

Charles was a lifelong farmer in the Leslie and Lacelle community.

Charles is survived by his wife Joyce Garrett of Osceola; daughter Kayla (husband Jerry) Garner of Osceola; sons, Steve (wife Becky) Garrett, Dan (wife Janet) Garrett and Brian (wife Martha) Garrett, all of Osceola; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Burnett and Virginia Fenn, both of Murray, and Edna Marriott of Polk City; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
