Last Osceola Vet

Services Sunday For Well
Known Civil War Vet-
eran; Lived Here Since
1885; Was 94 Years Old

H. A. Wirick, Osceola's last veteran of the Civil War, died suddenly about 8 o'clock this morning. He was 94 years old.

Services will be held from the Trinity Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.

Although in ill health since suffering an attack of influenza several weeks ago, his condition was not believed critical. He was not feeling so well last evening and it was thought best for him to spend a few days in the hospital. He was able to walk up the stairs to his room at that time. About 8 o'clock this morning he suffered a stroke and passed away within a few minutes.

He is survived by one daughter, Grace, who has been her father's constant companion since the death of Mrs. Wirick a number of years ago.

Mr. Wirick was born in DeKalb county, Indiana on May 15, 1846. He brought his family to Iowa in 1880, locating near Thayer. In 1885 he moved to Osceola and this has been his home ever since. Mrs. Wirick preceded him in death a number of years ago.

In spite of his advanced age, Mr. Wirick was mentally keen until his death. He took a deep interest in current affairs, listening to the radio every day. His presence at Memorial day and other patriotic programs were ever a source of inspiration to his fellow citizens.

Arrangements for the funeral had not been completed this morning but it is presumed the Legion will be in charge with military services at the cemetery.

The passing of Mr. Wirick leaves a void in the hearts of hundreds of citizens who loved and revered him and the Grand Army of the Republic he so ably represented.

With tear-dimmed eyes, the county salutes the passing of the last of that gallant band of men who after defending and preserving the Union, carved a great commonwealth out of the frontier that is now Iowa.

Mr. Wirick's death leaves only one Civil War veteran in Clarke county, T. F. Yetts of Hopeville.
