Last week on the eve of going to press we learned of the death of Mr. John Harlan of Fremont township, but too late to publish an obituary. Mr. Harlan was one of the old settlers of the county and one of the leading men. He died at his home on the 3rd instant at the age of sixty-four years.

He was a native of Darke county, Ohio, born January 19, 1825. He was a son of James and Nancy Harlan, the former born in Kentucky, May 1, 1801, and the latter in Indiana, June 2, 1808. James Harlan lived in Kentucky until fifteen yeas of age, and then accompanied his parents to Ohio, where he lived until 1851, to better his condition, concluded to try his fotune in the west, and accordingly moved with his family to Lee county, Iowa, where he lived fifteen years and in 1866 moved to Van Buren county where he lived 20 years. His wife died May 4, 1885 and he soon after left Van Buren county, and has since made his home with his son John in Clarke county.

John Harlan was reared in his native state, and after attaining manhood engaged in agricultural pursuits. In the fall of 1865 he moved to Iowa and settled in Fremont township, Clarke county buying one hundred and sixty acres of land, to which he had added twenty acres owning at date of death 200 acres, one of the best farms in the county.

He was married November 26, 1847, to Asenith Hubbard, daughter of Silas and Elizabeth (Anderson) Hubbard. Of the six children born to them, but two are living – Andrew B. and Lafayette H. Addison Monroe, Mary Catherine, Rosalie and an infant, died prior to the death of their father. In politics Mr. Harlan was a Republican. He held, during his life, various township offices, and was an efficient and faithful public servant. Hrs. Harlan is a member of the Christian church. Her father was a soldier in the rebellion, and served about fifteen months, when, on account of sickness, he was sent home on a furlough, and died twenty-four hours after his arrival.

The remains of John Harlan were interred in the cemetery near the Christian church, southeast of Jamison. A kind father, husband and friend has gone to his rest.
