Osceola Sentinel, May 4th, 1911

Casper Carter departed this life Monday, May 1, 1911, at his home in Osceola after a brief illness of bowel trouble. He was on the streets Saturday apparently as well as usual until toward evening when he was taken sick suddenly and helped home.
His age was 84 years, 26 days.

Deceased was born in Decatur county, Indiana, April 5, 1827, the only son of Dr. Abraham and Harriet Carter. He was reared and educated in the schools of Greensburgh and August 5, 1853, he was united in marriage to Miss Clara C. Spencer who, after a happy companionship of fifty-one years, passed away seven years ago. To this union were born eight children four of whom are living; one son, Ben, and three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Farley, Mrs. Harriet Shawver and Mrs. John Sanford. One granddaughter left motherless, found a congenial home in this household and grew to womanhood. Mr. Carter came with his family to this county in 1856 where he became a successful farmer.

At the breaking out of the Civil war he enlisted in Company D, 29th Iowa Infantry. After serving eighteen months he was transferred to Co. E. of the same regiment and was mustered as captain of the company, serving until the close of the war. He participated in the battles of Parkers’ Cross Roads, Lawn Creek, Resaca, siege of Atlanta and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. He received an honorable discharge at Washington in June, 1865. On returning home he continued in the pursuit of agriculture until twenty years ago when he moved to Oceola which has since been his home.

The funeral services were held at his late home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock conducted by Rev. G.E. Roberts of the Christian church, assisted by Rev. C.W. Neal of the Adventist church. The G.A.R Post attended the services in a body. Interment was made in the family lot in Union Chapel cemetery.
