George Mark Paul.

George Mark Paul, the fifth child of six children of Ebert and Maggie Paul, was born in Clarke county, Ia., November 29, 1894, and passed away after a brief illness of pneumonia in Kansas City, Missouri, April 17, 1918.

George Paul was the type of young man of whom any community may be justly proud and Clarke county is congratulating herself that this was the birth place and home of this true devoted life. His place in the hearts of this people was and is the fruit of a life of service. He was a member of the city fire department whose service was always rendered in a very unselfish way. People sometimes forget that the boys who render this perilous service to the community often do it at the cost of life, and always at a sacrifice. But this was the kind of service that appealed to George.

He enlisted in the service of his country August 5, 1917, and was in training for some time but because of an operation some time ago he was not recommended for further military service and was honorably discharged in January. This was a great disappointment to him, his ambition was stirred with the thoughts of service on the battlefields of Europe. And as he expresses it, said, "I do not see why they did not place me in some branch of the service where I could serve and serve just as well as any other man." But orders are orders in military life and he cheerfully obeyed. He was not content however and when the call came for men in the mechanical department he re-entered the service and was in training when he passed away. This was the spirit with which he passed into the greater world where the rewards are just and in keeping with life's great plan.

He was a member of the K. P. order, and his friendship was always true and unquestioned.

From early boy-hood he has been a member of the Christian Church always interested in the work of the kingdom of righteousness which is the kingdom of our Christ. Some are forced and urged and plead with to do this kind of service. But not so with George, he was always glad and loved to do whatever his hands found to do. For sometime he was a teacher of a boys Sunday school class and in example and precept he was qualified. He was interested in all the departments of the Church and worked where ever he could.

He leaves to mourn his father, E. G. Paul who is Mayor of our City, two sisters Mrs. Mable Edwards and Aletha, three brothers Frank, Earl and Everett and the entire community.

Funeral services were conducted from the Christian Church by Rev. James F. McKay, assisted by Rev. Leonard Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the body laid to rest in Maple Hill cemetery.
