John Davenport

John L. Davenport, lifelong resident of Clarke county, died at his home in Murray Friday, October 28. He was 71 years old. Services were held at the Murray Church of Christ, Sunday, October 30, with Rev. O. E. Richardson officiating and Watts funeral service in charge. Burial was in the Woodburn cemetery.

John L. Davenport was born December 18, 1877, the son of William and Emma Davenport and died Oct. 28, 1949, about 12:30 a. m. at his home in Murray. He was born in Woodburn and lived in Clarke county nearly all his life except for a few years from 1913 to 1918 which he spent in the vicinity of the town of Osage in Saskatchewan, Canada, on a wheat ranch.

He was married to Bessie Weaklend September 26, 1911, and a son Joseph A. was born to them. She died September 11, 1916 while they were in Canada. He returned to Clarke county and engaged in business in Woodburn until 1925. He was married to Samantha Marquis Gardner, August 25, 1926, at Osceola and they removed to Murray, and to this union one son Robert E. was born. He was engaged in the grocery business in Murray as long as his health permitted.

Surviving him are his wife, Samantha, his two sons, Joseph and Robert; his brothers, Jack of Woodburn, James and Keith of Osceola, Frank of Des Moines and Ed of Murray; his sisters, Nettie Hitt of Le Roy, Martha Marquis of Des Moines and Ella Harlan of Osceola; also two grandchildren, Michael and Rodney Davenport.

Those preceding him in death were his first wife Bessie; his twin brother, Joseph who died in 1907 and his oldest brother Roy who died in 1944.

He accepted Christ early in life and was a member of the Woodburn Church of Christ until he transferred his membership to the Church of Christ in Murray upon taking his residence in Murray.

He was widely known having many friends and associates. He was a man with many friends. He was afflicted more than most are called upon to bear, but his patience in his affliction was an example to all of us. He was comforted and strengthened to the end by the kindly ministrations of his wife.
