James H. Trumbo was born in Liberty, Clarke county, Iowa, on the 26th day of August, 1860, and died April 5, 1888, aged twenty-seven years, seven months and nine days. He has been suffering from a complication of lung and throat troubles for the past four or five months, and hopes were entertained until a few weeks past that he would ultimately recover.

Five weeks ago one of his two children accidently got hold of a bottle of carbolic acid and was fatally poisoned, since which time the father rapidly grew worse until the morning of the 5th, when he peacefully passed to that haven of rest. The writer of this and Mr. Trumbo grew to manhood together, attended the same schools, engaged in the same sports, and we know that James H. Trumbo was an honest, honorable citizen, generous to a fault, a true friend, and a man whose word was as good as his bond.

Death had no terrors for him – he met it bravely, and when conscious that death was near, seemed anxious for the dissolution. While on his sick bed he by faith obtained a bright conversion and died in the triumph of a living faith, requesting his friends and loved ones to meet him in heaven, and it is not strange, when he knew that death was inevitable, and with a certain knowledge of a glorious immortality beyond, that he should be eager for the separation, which to him would bring peace, health, happiness, eternal life.
“ And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.”

The sorrowing window, the fatherless child, the parents and friends have our most heartfelt sympathy in the dark hour of bereavement. The funeral took place from the late residence on Friday morning, conducted by the Rev. Joseph A. Morris, after which the remains were borne to the Bethel Cemetery for Interment, followed by a large concourse of sympathizing friends.
