John Kerr died at 9 A. M. March 3, at his home in Fremont township. He has failed rapidly with consumption for a few weeks, after having rallied last spring from the verge of the grave apparently, and being about all summer and fall.

He was born in Carroll county, Ohio, May 11, 1836 and came to Clarke county Iowa with his parents in 1853. October 17, 1858 he married Miss Elizabeth Glenn, by whom he had eight children.

When the war came, he enlisted in Company D. thirty-ninth Iowa Infantry, and served his country three years. He was wagon master of the Fourth Division Fifteenth Army Corps. He returned to Clarke county after the war, and engaged extensively in farming at which his energy and skill have made him very successful. He owned five hundred and twenty-five acres all cultivated, and a convenient house, barn and improvements up on it. He was one of the early settlers and much respected among the people. He has been trustee of Fremont township fourteen years consecutively.
He helped build the first mill in the county and also helped about the first saw mill in Osceola.

The disease had held him more than two years, but he bore it with fortitude, and never murmured or complained. He was conscious to the last, and told his sister he was ready to go. His father preceded him by nine years, and his brother-in-law John Davidson by five months.

He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and the brethren have been attending him in his last sickness. His wife died December 24, 1879.

The funeral took place from his home at 3 P.M. Wednesday under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias.
