Mr. A.J. Crew died at his home in Knox township, Saturday, May 7th, aged seventy-eight years, four months and twenty-five days. The funeral exercises were held at the Green Bay church, Monday, at 10 a.m., by Revs. Sampson and Sigler, in the presence of a large number of sympathizing relatives and friends, after which his remains were laid away in the Green Bay cemetery.

Mr. Crew was born in Northampton county, North Carolina, December 16, 1819, being one of a family of twelve children. He lived there until he was twenty-two years of age, his early life being spent on the home farm and his education being obtained by study at home. In 1842, in company with his parents he went to Belmont county, Ohio, where he was married, August 15, 1844. Ms. Crew died January 25, 1850, leaving three children. August 21, 1851, Mr. Crew married for his second wife, Elizabeth Smith, of Ohio. To this union were born nine children. Eleven children are living, namely: John, of Afton; Ms. Bradley and Mrs. Kirkendall, of Nebraska; Mrs. Pratt, of near Burlington; Lafe Crew, of Needles, California; Lincoln Crew and Mrs. Buckingham of Red Oak; Mrs. Metcalf, of Missouri; Mesdames Warren Freeman and Charley Luce, and George, of this county. All were present at the funeral except Mrs. Metcalf. His two granddaughters, Mrs. Cora Draper, of Afton, and Mrs. Baggs of Creston, were also present.

Mr. Crew came to Clarke county in 1854. He made the journey down the Ohio river by boat to St. Louis, then up to Keokuk by boat, also. From there he traveled by team to this county. He entered 240 acres of government land in Knox township, on which he has since resided. He started in life without means, but being industrious and economical he became one of the most prosperous and influential citizens of Knowx township. He was an active church member, having belonged to Lacelle M. E. church for many years. He lived a true, honorable, Christian life.
