In 1855 they moved to Agency City, Iowa and in 1866 they moved to Clarke county and have lived here since then. Twelve children were born to them, eight sons and four daughters. One daughter died in infancy and two sons after they grew to manhood.

He united with the Baptist church and accepted Christ as his Savior at the age of 21. After moving to Clarke county he united with the Methodist Protestant church and was a member of that church at the time of his death. He was fully conscious to the last and was ready and anxious to go.
