Johnathan C. Schaffer.

Johnathan C. Schaffer, son of Frank and Nancy Schaffer, was born in Johnson county, February 6, 1867, and departed this life November 7, 1927, being at the time of his death sixty years, nine months and one day. When a boy of three years he moved with his parents to Kansas, living there seven years, then moved back to Johnson county, Iowa, where they lived until he was fourteen years old, then they moved to Clarke county, Iowa, where he had lived the remainder of his life.

In the year 1896 he was untied in marriage to Mary Cook. To this union was born six children. two of them preceded him in death. Jesse S. Schaffer, Bessie E. Garner, Lucy F. Daniels and Frank J. Schaffer are left to mourn his departure, besides his loving wife and little granddaughter, Elinor May, who they are caring for. There are eight other grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

In the year 1882 he joined the M. P. church and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior in a meeting held by Rev. Tillotson and was a member of that church until the time of his death. When he was only nineteen years old he helped clean out an old well that had damps in and caused him to have rheumatism from which he has suffered all his life. All who knew him knew how he has always had to suffer. All his brothers and sisters were at his bedside helping to care for him for three weeks, and his own children were all helping that were able to be there.

Funeral services were held from the Fremont church by Rev. Tague, and he was laid to rest in the Fremont cemetery. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Ford Ewalt of Corning, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Jobe of Arispe, Iowa, Johnathan Will of Iowa City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Schaffer of Creston, Iowa, Mrs. Joe Deitrick of Sandstone, Minn.
