“Graveside funeral services for Fred Chambers, 70, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday January 28 at Hebron Cemetery northeast of Weldon. Visitation is open Wednesday at Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon prior to services from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.”

“Fred Chambers”

“Fred Wallace Chambers, age 70 of Leon, Iowa, son of Clarence Otis and Mable Olive (Wallace) Chambers, was born June 8, 1933 in Shenandoah, Iowa and died January 24, 2004 at Osceola Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Osceola, Iowa.

Fred’s mother died when he was small, and his father raised him in Terre Haute, near Davis City, Iowa. Fred farmed with his dad and later farmed north of Van Wert, Iowa. He also worked on dairy farms in northern Iowa.

Fred served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was in infantry combat in Korea and received several service medals.

While in service, Fred married Betty Marsengill in 1952. To this union four daughters were born: Sharon Ellen, Debra Linn, Sandra Kay, and Dorcia Ann. Fred and Betty were later divorced.

Fred was a heavy-equipment operator, driving bulldozers for road construction all over Iowa. Through his work, he traveled a lot and met a lot of people during his lifetime.

Fred was a loner and enjoyed driving the countryside. He also liked reading and fishing.

For the past five years, he had been a resident of Parkview Apartments in Leon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother Robert Keith Chambers; and brother Jack Chambers.

Fred is survived by his four daughters: Sharon Michael and husband J.D. of Kansas City, Missouri, Debbie Courtney and husband Mike of Leon, Sandra Jones and jusband Brad of Garden Grove, Iowa, and Dorcia Brazelton of Des Moines, Iowa; 9 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at Hebron Cemetery near Weldon, Iowa with Rev. Max Carmichael officiating. Arrangements are through Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon, Iowa.”
