Joseph Saddoris Sr.
Joseph Harrison Saddoris Sr., son of Pearl Saddoris and Elizabeth Twombley Saddoris, was born Nov. 25, 1908, in Lacelle, and died March 12, 2004, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 95.

Mr. Saddoris grew up and attended country school near Lacelle in Clarke County. He married Evelyn Louise Moran on Jan. 2, 1929, in Corning, and the couple became the parents of six children.

Mr. Saddoris was inducted into the United States Navy on April 13, 1944, and served in the Seabees in Guam during World War II. He retired in 1970 with more than 25 years of Naval service, including the Naval Reserves.

Mr. and Mrs. Saddoris farmed in Clarke County until 1934 when he began working for the Iowa State Highway Commission in Osceola until 1951. He also served as the City of Oskaloosa's streets commissioner from 1951 to 1973. He retired in 1980 from Garden and Associates Engineering.

He moved to Osceola in 1998 following the death of Mrs. Saddoris.

Mr. Saddoris was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion Post 34 in Oskaloosa, the Fleet Reserve Association and a member of the First Christian Church in Osceola. He enjoyed woodworking, watching the Chicago Cubs and driving with Mrs. Saddoris through the countryside.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant daughter, Frances Louise in 1931; son, Harold Eugene in 1995; two grandchildren, Steven and Linda Saddoris; six brothers and four sisters.

Mr. Saddoris is survived by son, Joseph H. Saddoris Jr. and wife Ruth Saddoris of Ames; son, Donald L. Saddoris and wife Mary Saddoris of Goreville, Ill.; son, Ronald J. Saddoris and wife Cathy Saddoris of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Patricia J. Petersen and husband Richard Petersen of Clinton; brother, Harold L. Saddoris of Illinois City, Ill.; sister-in-law, Naomi Saddoris of Osceola; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews including nephew Darrell Mateer and wife Vicky Mateer of Murray and their son Brian, who gave him care in the last six years.

Funeral services were March 17 at Kale Funeral Home, the Rev. Hugh Stone officiating. Organist was Virginia Reynolds and soloist was Emil Rinderspacher. Musical selections were Amazing Grace, Precious Lord Take My Hand and On Eagles Wings. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Matthew Petersen, Daniel Saddoris, Jerry Saddoris, Brian Mateer, Ryan Charkowski and Dalen Jones. Honorary bearers were Donald Saddoris, Jennifer Petersen, Christopher Saddoris, Joey Saddoris, John Saddoris, Lynn Saddoris, LuAnn Jones, Carol Saddoris, Mitchell Saddoris and Susan Hinks.
