Winston Wood

Winston Wood, son of Earl and Luella Wallace Wood, was born Dec. 31, 1925, on a farm four miles east of Weldon and died Dec. 21, 2001, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was 75.

He received his education in the LeRoy schools and graduated from the LeRoy Consolidated School in 1943.

Mr. Wood was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Navy from December 1943 to April 1946. After his discharge from the Navy he moved to Paonia, Colo. where he lived from 1946 to 1951. During that time he worked in a local coal mine. He also worked for Rio Grande Motorway at Canon City, Colo. in 1956 and 1957.

He met Margaret Jean Sparks and they were married June 27, 1948, in Paonia. The couple became the parents of two children, Marvin and Katherine.

They moved back to the Weldon and Osceola area and farmed for 23 years before they moved to Osceola in 1975. He was a painter for 12 years. Mr. and Mrs. Wood moved to Newton in 1998, to be closer to their family. Mr. Wood served on the boards of directors of the Farmer’s Co-op, Clarke Electric Cooperative and the Farm Bureau.

He was a former member of the Smyrna Friends Church and the Osceola Calvary Baptist Church. He later became a member of the Independent Bible Church in Leon. While in Newton has attended the Immanuel Baptist Church. He valued his relationship with his Lord, the love of his family and the preciousness of friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Max and Arden Wood and one sister, Wilma Henkle.

Mr. Wood is survived by his wife of Newton; a son, Marvin Dean Wood and his wife, Donna Wood, of Del Rio, Texas; a daughter, Katherine Luella Hembry and her husband, Mike Hembry, of Newton; six grandchildren, Michelle Van Hook and her husband, Lieutenant Matthew Van Hook, of Grand Forks Air Force Base in N.D., Christopher and Jeremy Wood of Texas, Lance Corporal James Hembry of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and Mark and Bob Hembry of Newton; a sister-in-law, Betty Wood of Canon City; as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were Dec. 27 at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola, Pastor Brain Hardee and Pastor Kenneth Van Loon officiating. Charletta Durell, organist, accompanied vocalists, Fred Cox, Allen Miller, Richard Wheeler and Mike Durell. Musical selections were Victory in Jesus, Old Rugged Cross and Because He Lives.

Casket bearers were Michelle Van Hook, Christopher Wood, Mark Hembry, Jeremy Winston Wood, Bob Hembry and Bill Wood. Honorary bearers were Lance Corporal James Hembry USMC and Lt. Matthew Van Hook USAF. Interment was in Smyrna Cemetery in Clarke County. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leon Bible Church or the Immanuel Baptist Church in Newton.
