Kathner / Pankonin from Germany

Some of the Kathner's went to California and others to Idaho; some ended up in Texas for at least a little while. Where ever they go the Pankonin's seem to be close. The family I am researching is Kathner but Pankonin is the mother's maiden name so they are tied together and likely come from the same place in Germany; I am trying to get back to the German records to do more research and complete some of these ties of all of these people I have dangling. I haven't found the exact place they came from in Germany yet and that is my primary goal at the moment. Any help or suggestions would be wonderful!
