Death of A Veteran

Mr. Frederick Markle, an old and highly respected veteran, died at his home, 752 West Walnut street, on the morning of January 9, 1896 at 5:30. Although Mr. Markle was a resident of Des Moines for only a few months, he was quite well and favorably known. He has been in Iowa thirty years and had a wide acquaintance.

Frederick Markle was born at Wurtenberg, Germany, on August 25, 1841. He came to this country with his parents George Frederick and Catharine Markle in 1855 and the family settled at Little Falls, New York, where he remained until the war broke out. He served four and a half years in the Union Army with honor, distinction and glory, not only to himself, but to the grand old stars and stripes he loved so well. He first served in the Second New York Heavy Artillery and then as first lieutenant of Co. C, US Heavy Artillery.

After the war he came to Iowa in 1866, during May, and on July 4 of that year married Alcena M. Abbott of New Hampton. They had four children, four of whom are now living. He came to Des Moines on September 1, and since that time has resided at 752 East Walnut with his wife and children.
