Carolyn Amanda Ball was born June 1, 1920, in Fredericksburg, the daughter of Roy and Rella (Stansberry) Barker. She received her education in Fredericksburg and then continued her education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, receiving her teaching certificate. She taught in several rural country schools in Chickasaw County. On May 8, 1943, Carolyn was united in marriage to Robert William Ball.

The couple married at Immaculate Conception Church in Sumner. To this union two children were born. The couple moved to Tampa, Florida where they lived until Robert was Honorably Discharged from the Army Air Corp. The couple then moved back to Fredericksburg, where they raised their family and together farmed the Barker family farm until their retirement in 1980. In October of 2001, failing health made it necessary for them to become residents of Grandview Nursing Care in Oelwein. They resided together at the nursing home until Robert died on January 19, 2004.

Carolyn enjoyed working on her crafts, sewing, and was a talented baker. She was a very active member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Pinhook Catholic Church. She especially enjoyed the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family for being a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Survivors include her two children, Terrill “Terry” (Mona) Ball of Iowa City, and Catherine (John) Ries of Elma; four grandchildren, Janae (Jim) Wilson, Mark (Joanne) Ries, Deb Ries, and Kent Ries; and five great-grandchildren, Kayla, Mindy, and Dillon Wilson, Alyvia Ries, and Hayden Ries.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Ruth Laabs and Dorothy Voorhees.
