CHARLES CITY – Raymond W. “Ray” Heit, 87, Charles City and formerly of New Hampton, died Tuesday, June 29 at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City, following a brief illness.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City, with Rev. Msgr. Stanley J. Hayek presiding.

Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton.

Visitation was from 2:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 1 at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, Charles City, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. Parish Vigil Scriptural Wake Service, and also for one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Raymond William “Ray” Heit was born January 29, 1912 in rural New Hampton, the son of Joseph and Mary (Bollerschen) Heit. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in New Hampton. On June 14, 1938, Ray was united in marriage with Sarah Burgart at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Washington. The couple made their home on the family farm southeast of New Hampton, where he was engaged in farming. Mrs. Heit died Dec. 8, 1971 in New Hampton.

On March 9, 1974, Ray married Edith Elizabeth Freidhof Schmitt at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Roseville, rural Marble Rock. The couple made their home on the Schmitt family farm, rural Marble Rock. Ray continued to farm his family farm near New Hampton until his retirement in 1979. The couple moved to Charles City in January 1991. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Loral Order of the Moose Lodge #1011, both of Charles City. Ray enjoyed fishing and traveling, especially on bus tours.

Surviving are his wife, Edith, Charles City; four children and their spouses, Melvin and Jeannette Heit and Gerald and Jeanne Heit, New Hampton, Norman and Mary Ann Heit, Fredericksburg, Maxine and Chuck Shekleton, Farmersburg; five step children and their spouses, Robert and Patricia Schmitt, Kenneth and Francis Schmitt and Gerald and Linda Schmitt, all of Rockford, Cathy and Tom Curl, Ionia, and Tim and Teresa Schmitt, Greene; 13 grandchildren; 16 step grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jerome and Esther Heit and Ralph Heit, all of New Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Lorane Holschlag, New Hampton, Eleanor and Roy Fankhauser, Williams.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Sarah; an infant son.
