Funeral services were held Friday morning, September 26, from St. Mary’s Church, New Hampton, for John Leo Heit, 96, a former New Hampton resident who died September 23 at a Charles City nursing home.

The Rev. Msgr. J.J. Olinger officiated at the service with interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton. Casket bearers were Jerome Heit, Ralph Heit, Donald Heit, Tom Guthart, Gerald Newton and Harold Holschlag. Larkin-Martin Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.

John Leo Heit was born September 19, 1879, in Chickasaw County, the son of William and Margaret (Papenheim) Heit. He attended New Hampton schools and was graduated from the New Hampton Business College in the early 1900’s. Mr. Heit was employed by White Farm Equipment at Charles City and also was an implement dealer at Ionia and Charles City until his retirement. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Immaculate Conception Church, Charles City, where he had lived for a number of years. Mr. Heit and the former Elizabeth Klienfehn were married in Minnesota in 1903 and they lived near New Hampton. Mrs. Heit died in 1944 and he later married Emma Diesburg, who also is deceased.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. William (LaVonne) Guthart of Charles City; three sons, Gallus of New Hampton, Roman of Charles City and Virgil of Fairfield, Ohio; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and a brother, Martin of New Hampton.

Mr. Heit also was preceded in death by a sister, Matilda, and five brothers, Alphonse, Frank, Tony, Joe and William.
