Margaret Ann (Soukup) Hoge, 68, died on Sept 4, at her home in San Jose, Calif.

All who knew Margaret are invited to attend a memorial celebration at 3 p.m. in the Gathering Space at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, New Hampton, on Saturday, October 3. A Memorial Mass of Resurrection will follow and a celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at Chaff’s Restaurant, New Hampton, after mass.

She was born on Sept 28, 1940 in New Hampton, to Harry and Clara (Busta) Soukup. Margaret attended school in New Hampton. After graduation, she became a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Education from Loyola University, Chicago. She taught 2nd and 3rd grades at St. Mary’s Catholic School in New Hampton. In 1970, she transferred to San Jose, CA where she continued to teach at St. Leo’s Catholic School and later at Cedar Grove School.

Margaret was united in marriage to Hal Hoge on October 9, 1982. Two years later, she retired from teaching to travel the world with her husband. During their 27 years together, Hal and Margaret traveled to 100 different countries. The highlights of their adventures were two trips to Antarctica and their trip to Norway in 2008 where they sailed to 32 different Fjords. Margaret enjoyed visiting Hawaii every year and staying at the different islands; Maui and Kauai were her favorites.

Margaret became an Associate of the Sisters of Charity, BVM, and was actively engaged in BVM meetings and projects. Margaret was well known for her charitable spirit, especially her work with the American Red Cross. She volunteered in various disasters across America for twenty years, beginning with the 1989 earthquake in San Jose. She volunteered with the San Jose Police Department, the Humane Society, and the San Jose Clean Highways program

Margaret is survived by her loving husband Harold Hoge; her brother Bob Soukup and (Betty Soukup), New Hampton; her aunt Therese Busta, Cresco; nieces and nephews, her three step children in California, Hal Hoge III, Diana Otay and Dede Hibner, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Clara Soukup and her sister, Ruth Straw.
