Larry Wolf, Nashua's Second War Casualty, Dies in Jeep Accident

Not the war in Vietnam, but a jeep accident while he was on duty in Germany, has cost the Nashua community its second young man in the current war mobilization.

Stricken was Larry Wolf, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wolf of rural Nashua. He was a Specialist 4 with the 1st Squadron, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment stationed in Germany near the Czechoslovakian border in the general area of Nurenberg. The base is known among the servicemen as "The Rock."

Larry had only recently returned from a furlough which he spent in Europe.

Notification to the parents came Saturday afternoon. A Captain Roberts and a sergeant with him from the National Guard unit at Waterloo, came to Nashua with this notification. They located Mrs. Wolf at St. John Lutheran church, where she was attending a funeral. She said she did not want to talk with them until she got home and joined her husband. She drove home, followed by the captain and sergeant.

When told there was news about their son, both father and mother asked, "Which one?", since they have two sons in the service. The other, Wesley, is stationed at Ft. Hood, Tx.

Captain Roberts then told the parents that their son Larry had met death in an accident in a military vehicle. Details were not specified, but since Larry was on duty and was an official jeep driver, it was discerned that a jeep was involved.

He died at 7:15 p.m. Friday in the base hospital.

Captain Roberts told the Wolfs it would be up to 10 days until Larry could be returned home for burial (this, then, would be sometime after Friday this week before the body would arrive).

Full military honors will be accorded Larry, Captain Roberts said. A military escort will meet the body at New York and accompany it to Nashua. The Wolfs were given their choice of an escort on active duty and chose Sgt. Richard Lumley, son of the Harry Lumleys, who is on duty at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas.

The Army said Larry's personal effects would be returned. This is quite some doing, since these effects include a car he purchased over there, and which he drove during his furlough.

Funeral services will be held at St. John Lutheran church in Nashua, Larry's home church.

Larry was born on the home farm, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wolf. He attended schools of the district and graduated from Nashua high school in 1970. He played varsity football.

He entered the Army in June of 1970 and was sent to Germany in November of the same year.

He is survived by his parents; a sister, Susan, of Minneapolis; a brother, Wesley, also in the Army; Stanley, of Waterloo; and Roger, at home. There are many close relatives, grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. Mrs. Amy Wolf is his paternal grandmother and maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Plautz.
