An Old Resident Passes Away

Mr. A.N. Peterson passed away at his home in the suburbs of this city, Monday evening at 8:45 o’clock after a brief illness. Mr. Peterson had been in failing health for several weeks past, caused by a general breaking down of the system and for the past nine days was confined to his bed. Everything possible was done by those who cared for him to alleviate his sufferings, but the last few days of his illness were filled with intense pain, and it was not until he closed his eyes in eternal sleep that he was at rest.

Abel N. Peterson was born at Windsor, (Windsor County), Vermont, October 6, 1827, and was the second youngest of a family of ten children, and was the only surviving member of that family. In 1854, the family moved to Rockford, ILL, where he lived until 1865, when he came to Nashua, Iowa where he spent the remainder of his life. He was thrice married, the first marriage being to Emily Nutting, February 5, 1866, who died May 6, 1891; the second to Susan Springstead, May 10, 1892, she dying October 20, 1906; and the third to Elizabeth (Bradley) Seifert March 22, 1907, who with two stepchildren survive him.

For forty five years the deceased had lived among us, and during these many years, he has always been regarded as an honorable and upright citizen, a man who attended strictly to his own affairs. He came here when the country was new and endured all the hardships of a pioneer life.

He was a tiller of the soil, and while successful in accumulating considerable prosperity, it was through hard work and economy that he did so. He also numbered among those who gave a liberal amount toward organizing the Nashua Power Co., and the Nashua Woolen Mill Co., several years ago, which at that time, gave promise as being an advancement to the interests of the town.

The funeral was held at the late home Wednesday at 2 P.M., Rev. Burch conducting the services, and the remains were laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery.
