DIED

At his home in Lawler, Saturday, October 5th, 1895, Benjamin Carter, aged sixty years. The deceased was a native of Ireland and came to this country when a lad. He was a volunteer in the 38th Iowa Infantry Volunteers and served his country well during the term of his enlistment. As was so common with men in the field, he had his soubriquet, and was known in and out of his regiment as "The Wild Irishman” and was one of those characters that did so much to drive home-sickness from camp.

He has been an intense sufferer for the past, fifteen months from cancer in his throat, but in his last moments all pain departed and he answered the last roll call as quietly as though he was answering a detail to bury a comrade.

At his request, he was buried by the G. A. R. (Grand Army of the Republic) and over a quarter at a hundred carriages followed his remains from Lawler to the New Hampton Cemetery, and when they arrived, there was a vast concourse of people to gather around his grave and there were representatives from a large number of G. A. R. Posts present to assist in the last service for their departed comrade.

In Memoriam.
