NICHOLAS PETERS DIES AT RIPE AGE

WELL KNOWN CITIZEN OF DAYTON TOWNSHIP PASSED AWAY MONDAY

Nicholas Peters, Sr., for forty-seven years a resident of Chickasaw county, died at his home five miles southwest of New Hampton Monday evening at half past 5 o'clock.

He was aged 88 years, seven months and eight days.

Mr. Peters had been gradually failing on account of extreme age. The immediate cause of death was internal hemorrhage. He was conscious to the last.

Nicholas Joseph Peters was born at Trier, Germany, March 26, 1830, the only son of Nicholas Peters and Mary (Posen) Peters. He grew up in the old country and was confirmed in the Catholic faith. At the age of 25 he came to America, locating in Dubuque county in 1855. He spent two years in Arkansas and then returned to Dubuque county, where he engaged in the livery business.

He was united in marriage with Magdalene Derga at Dubuque, Jan. 22, 1862. They resided there until 1872, when they came to Chickasaw county and bought a farm. Later a change was made and the farm where he spent so many useful years was purchased.

Mr. Peters was the father of eleven children of whom eight survive. They are Mary, wife of William Kreuger of New Hampton; Nicholas Peters, Jr., of New Hampton township; Teresa, wife of C.W. Schnurr of New Hampton; Susan, wife of Theodore Roths, of Ionia; Michael of Richland township; Frances, wife of Nicholas Shinstine, of Richland township; and Magdalene, wife of Jay Brannon, residing on the old homestead.

John and Matilda died in infancy and Matt was drowned at the age of 26, twenty years ago.

The funeral will be held at St. Mary's church this morning at 9:30, Mass for the dead being read by the rector, Rev. Fr. B.H. Forkenbrock, and interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Peters was a man of upright character, a good, citizen, neighbor and friend. He was a strong supporter of the movement for the organization of St. Mary's parish and gave liberally of his time and means to procure its establishment and erect the church and other buildings.

His aged widow and the children have the sympathy of many friends in their loss.
