Former Bonair Pastor Drowns
The many friends of Rev. G. W. Meyers, formerly pastor of the Bonair M. E. circuit, were inexpressibly shocked to hear of his death by drowning, which occurred last Saturday afternoon at Bassett, Iowa, where he has been located for nearly a year.
From the New Hampton Tribune, we reprint the following account of the sad accident:
The death of Rev. G. W. Meyers of Bassett at 5:30 Saturday evening, by being drowned in the Cedar river, was a great shock to the entire community and has caused a feeling of deepest sorrow to all who knew this splendid young minister.
Rev. Meyers and Rev. Lackman, an evangelist, were holding meetings at Bassett, and Rev. Meyers had taken the boys to the river for an afternoon's entertainment. While in bathing he went down with the swift current of the swollen stream.
Lloyd Potter rescued the body in about 20 minutes and Dr. Niemack of Charles City was called and brought his pulmotor, but life was extinct.
Rev. Meyers is survived by his wife and one child, a daughter, to whom our most sincere sympathy is extended.
The funeral was held at his church in Bassett, Monday, and the remains taken back to his old home in Illinois for burial.
During the stay of Rev. Meyers at Bonair, the Plain Dealer folks became very well acquainted with him and feel his loss in a personal way. Mr. Meyers was an earnest and sincere preacher of the gospel who lived his religion to the best of his ability.
