Mrs. Kearney Dies At Age Of 90 Years
Pioneer Woman And Beloved Mother Passes Away On Thanksgiving Day
A life of unusual length and rich in the fruitage it has borne came to a peaceful close last Thursday, Nov. 26, 1914, when Mrs. Sarah Kearney gently fell asleep at the age of 90 years. The end came at half-past six in the morning. Mrs. Kearney had been in feeble health for several years as a result of extreme age. No particular malady was present, but only a gradual depletion of the forces of nature. She was conscious until two hours before her death. She was the last of a large family of brothers and sisters.
The maiden name of the deceased was Sarah McInnis and she was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1824. She grew to womanhood there and was united in marriage with Mr. David Kearney in 1851. In 1856, when our present populous and prosperous county contained but few inhabitants, they came here to build up a home. They first settled on a farm two miles southeast of Jerico, where their son, Michael, now resides. After a residence of thirty-six years in Jacksonville Township they came to make their home in New Hampton, on Broadway, opposite St. Joseph’s church. Mr. Kearney passes away in 1896, four years after their coming to New Hampton.
Two sons and nine daughters were born to them, of whom six survive; also fifty-seven grandchildren and thirty-five great-grandchildren. Her widow daughter, Mrs. Catherine Norton, has lived with her, tenderly caring for her during her declining years. Two daughters are in the Mercy Order at Marion, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. J. P. Dendinger, lives in Nebraska and her other son, Michael, and her daughter, Mrs. William Murphy, live in Chickasaw County.
The funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s church Saturday morning. Rev. Fr. Carey, rector of St Joseph’s, assisted by Rev. Fr. Craney of Parkersburg, and Rev. Fr. Neeman of Reilly Settlement, celebrated Solemn Requiem Mass. Her mortal remains were interred in St. Ignatius cemetery at Reilly Settlement, where her husband and four daughters repose. May she rest in peace. “Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord, for their works shall follow them.” Most fittingly indeed may these consoling words be said concerning this departed one, whose life exemplified the teachings of her devout faith in the sacred duties of wife and mother. Ever self-sacrificing, she tried to do her duty in all the things. In her removal from us the community loses a respected citizen, her family a loving and honored mother and her church a devout member. She died fully fortified by the rites of her holy church and we trust that our great loss is her eternal gain.
Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Sisters Camillus and Lagouri of Marion, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Dendinger, Mr. John Conley, Mrs. David Conley and Mrs. Thomas Callahan, all of Lourel, Nebraska; Owen and Agnes Reilly of Lawler; Michael Reilly of Jerico, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Enloe and Mrs. T. Timmermans and children of Alta Vista, and Mr. and Mrs. Hugh McBride of Cresco.
