A Fatal Runaway
John Dowd, of Jacksonville, a farmer living twelve miles north of here, was in town Wednesday after lumber. He and his oldest son started home, each with a full load of lumber, the young man ahead. When about a mile and a half from town, on the down grade this side of the Dorgan bridge, Mr. Dowd’s team became unmanageable and ran away, throwing him from the wagon, and it is supposed the wheel struck his head, breaking his skull and killing him instantly. The son was some distance in advance of his father and knew nothing of the accident until overtaken by the runaway team.
Deceased was a well-to-do farmer, has lived in the county for many years, and had the respect of all who knew him. Temperate, industrious and honest, his life was an exemplary one, and his sudden death is a great shock to this entire community. Deceased was about seventy or seventy-five years of age, was born in Ireland, but has spent almost his entire life in this country, coming here when quite young. He leaves a wife and four children, two boys and two girls, one being the wife of T. F. Seery Jr.; the others are not married. The family has the sympathy of this entire community.
