DIED.

JOHN CLARKEN

On Saturday evening at his home in Jacksonville township occurred the death of one of her oldest and most highly respected citizens, John Clarken, the immediate cause of his death being an acute attack of bronchitis.

John Clarken was born on March 2d 1820 in County Monahan, Ireland. In his young manhood be came to America and for a number of year was located in Pennsylvania. In the year 1854 he came to this county and settled in Jacksonville township where he resided up to the time of his death. He was never married. Three brothers survive him. They are Francis Clarken of Lawler, Thomas Clarken of Howard county and Henry Clarken of Webster county. At the time of his death be was living with his niece, Mrs. Frank Murphy, whose husband farms Mr. Clarken's farm.

Mr. Clarken was a remarkable man in many respects. Once, since January 1st he walked from his farm to New Hampton and back and thought nothing of it. He has been known to walk the entire distance to and from Jacksonville to Dubuque in three days. The hardships incidental to life in this county in those early days may have served to break down his strong constitution, but he thought and felt little of them. Mr. Clarken was also a man of sunny and benevolent disposition. He was always cheerful and his presence brought smiles wherever he went. He was kind and charitable and was careful about the right hand knowing what the left hand did. He was honest, frugal, temperate. He accumulated sufficient property to live in comfort in his declining years. He was also a man well informed as to what is going on in world affairs, and from his reading derived much comfort. He was a devout member of the Roman Catholic church and died in the full enjoyment of her rites.

The funeral was bald yesterday from the church at Lourdes. A large concourse of friends and relatives followed the remains to their last resting place. He died universally loved and respected. We feel a personal loss in his death.
