Terrible Tragedy.
Our city was thrown into a fever of excitement Saturday when it became known that Joe Burns had been crushed to death under the cruel wheels of a passenger train as it was pulling out of town. It seems Mr. Burns accompanied some friends to the train, (there had been a dance here the night before) and as the train pulled out, he stepped aboard and bade them goodby, walked forward and got off at the front end of the last car. In stepping from the train he slipped and fell besede{sic} the track and the steps or some part of the car struck him and knocked him onto the rails and before he could save himself or bystanders could help him the hind trucks passed over the body at the chest, killing him instantly as there was no signs of life, when picked up a few seconds later.— Lawler Dispatch.Source: Decorah Republican Jan. 29, 1903 Page 2 Col 2
Killed By Cars at Lawler.
Joe Burns, aged 39, went to the train at Lawler last Saturday to see some friends off. He went into the car. The train started sharply and ere he could get off was under rapid motion. On stepping to the ground he fell against the side of the car and as he did so was drawn beneath the car. The steps or the boxing of the wheels struck him, breaking his neck and bruising and crushing his arm and side. When his friends reached his side life had gone out.
