Obituary for Shirley Melugin
Shirley E. Melugin, age 96 of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Per Shirley's wishes no formal services will be held.
Shirley Emma Melugin was born November 14, 1919, in Fredericksburg, Iowa, the daughter of John and Rose (Hruska) Mikes. She attended school in Fredericksburg and was a 1937 graduate of Fredericksburg High School. During her teenage years, Shirley worked for her father, John Mikes, the original founder of Mikes Meat Market in Fredericksburg. Shirley then attended college at American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She returned to Fredericksburg and worked at First State Bank of Fredericksburg for several years.
Shirley was united in marriage to Woodrow "Pete" Melugin on September 16, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. To this union three children were born. The couple moved to Marble Rock, IA, where they resided for four years. They then moved back to Fredericksburg where Shirley co-owned and worked next to her husband Pete at S & W Grocery for 23 years. Shirley retired in Fredericksburg.
Shirley took flying lessons before World War II and had a passion for flying. She was proud to be able to visit the birthplace of her father in the Czech Republic. Shirley loved to tend to her flowers and plants. She was a past member of the United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star.
Shirley is survived by one son, John (Connie) Melugin of Waterloo, IA; one daughter, Jane (John) Melugin Brooks of Fredericksburg, IA; one granddaughter, Jennifer (Bryan) Melugin and great - granddaughter Elise Melugin all of Elgin, IL.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Woodrow Melugin in 2000; son, William in infancy; three sisters: Ann Murray, Rose Mullens, and Isabelle Turbett; and by five brothers: John, Edwin, Frank, James, and Victor Mikes.
