Obituary for Evelyn Ann Kahn

Evelyn A. Kahn, age 76, of New Hampton, Iowa, died Monday, July 25, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016, at Republic Community Church, rural Ionia, with Rev. John Tunnicliff officiating. Interment will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery with Linn Shekleton, Matthew Moore, Jeffrey Moore, Paul Brandenburg, Mike Hagen, Jason Shekleton, Rex Nolte and Daryl Schmitt service as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Sabelka, Dale Throndson, Wayne Throndson, Francis Best, Randy Liddle, Walter Wenthold, Sam Wenthold, Rob Pennebaker and Charlie Distad.

Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2016, at the Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Evelyn Ann Kahn was born on September 13, 1939, in rural Franklin County, IA, the daughter of William and Anna (Schafer) Moore. At age 5, the family moved to Sheffield where she graduated from high school in 1958. While in high school she was very involved in the music programs and was in several plays. Following graduation she took some courses at NIACC in Mason City and worked for Farmer’s Hybrid Seed Corn Company in Hampton. In 1965 she accepted a position as a secretary with Sheffield Brick and Tile.

On September 21, 1974, at the Presbyterian Church in McGregor, Iowa, she was united in marriage to Neil William Kahn Sr. The couple farmed south of New Hampton and Neil was a salesman for Sheffield Brick and Tile. In 1985, Evelyn became owner of Kahn Tile and Supply. Neil passed away on November 19, 2004. Evelyn continued with the business with the help of David and Jean Leichtman.

In 2011 she sold the business, retired and moved to her dream home in New Hampton.

Evelyn had been a member of the Williamstown United Methodist Church where she was very active and served as organist for many years. She loved taking pictures, collecting John Deere memorabilia, following the Iowa Hawkeyes. Evelyn enjoyed taking ‘road trips’ especially to family reunions and her many trips to Mayo Clinic.

Survivors includes two brothers, Loren (Jean) Moore of Mason City, Edwin (Bernice) Moore of La Mesa, CA; sister, Vivian Swain of Petaluma, CA; brothers-in-law, Edmund (Ann) Anderson of Holland, MI; Gale Kahn of Kansas City, MO; sister-in-law, Leola Moore of Colorado Springs, CO;
Step-son, Neil (Julianne) Kahn of Waterloo, step-daughters, Sherryl Paul of Lansing, Iowa, Karen Kahn of Charles City, Evelyn “Jeanie” Budweg, Mary (Curt) Reisner all of New Hampton, Kimberly (Amy) Havens, of Omaha, NE; Step-grandchildren, Shana Lair, Rachel Kahn, Brian Kahn, Sabrina (Sam) Venegas, Grant (Amanda) Harkrader, Brianna (Jared) Pitz, Dan Budweg, Gina (Dean Dacay) Marshall (Zach Connor) Havens; step-great grandchildren, Karly Holland, Jordyn Lair, Ryleigh Lair, Wesley Lair, Kaitlin “Katie” Ann Bertsch-Budweg, Logan Pitz and Mason Pitz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Neil; sister, Venice (Moore) Anderson, Brothers, Alvin and Sherman; step-grandson, Reed Holland.
