Obituary for Luma J. Bullock--
Luma J. Bullock, age 98 of Nashua, Iowa, died Thursday evening, June 14, 2012, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, Iowa.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2012, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Nashua with Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Concelebrating the Mass with him will be Rev. Herbert Tegeler (Dyersville), Rev. Linus Rasing (New Hampton), and Rev. Francis Heimerman (Nashua).
The pall will be placed on the casket by the family. Interment will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Nashua, with Tom Benyo, Stuart Demro, Arne Bogie, Dale Schroeder, Gary Downing, and Richard Leavens serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Joe Bullock, Michael Bullock Jr., John Duffield, Don Duffield, Brian Walsh, and Colleen Walsh.
Friends may greet the family 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Hugeback – Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua where there will be a 5:00 p.m. Rosary. Visitation continues 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Illuminatta “Luma” Josepha Bullock was born February 21, 1914, in Nashua, Iowa, the daughter of Alois and Addie (Gerken) Tegeler. She received her education in Nashua, and graduated from Nashua High School in 1931. After High School she worked at the telephone company in Nashua. Deciding to move her career into the medical field, Luma accepted a job in New Hampton at the medical clinic as a transcriptionist.
While working in New Hampton she met the love of her life, Harry H. Bullock. On May 19, 1941 they were united in marriage in Santa Fe, New Mexico, by her uncle, Archbishop Rudolph A. Gerken. To this union three children were born, Michael, Alan, and Heidi. Shortly after being married the couple made Nashua their home.
After moving to Nashua, Luma stayed home and raised the family while Harry worked as a carpenter. Harry developed cancer and died from the disease in 1968. Luma then began working at the former Schoitz Hospital in Waterloo as a medical transcriptionist retiring in 1976. She had been a foster grandparent in Charles City for several years. Luma also taught religion class for St. Michael’s Church for several years. Her most important treasure was her family and she also enjoyed knitting, reading, and collecting seashells. Luma was an avid painter and did many works for people in the community focusing on portraits. Luma enjoyed traveling, especially staying at elderly hostels at different colleges in the area.
Survivors include one son, Alan R. Bullock of Nashua; one son-in-law, Michael Walsh of New Berlin, Wisconsin; six grandchildren, Joe (Gina) Bullock of Corona, Calif., Michael Bullock Jr. of Greene, John (Jennifer) Duffield of Greene, Don Duffield of Cookeville, Tennessee, Brian (Ann) Walsh of Madison, Wisconsin., and Colleen (Christopher Smith) Walsh of Vail, Colorado; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry H. Bullock; one son, Michael H. Bullock; one daughter, Heidi Walsh; one daughter-in-law, Janet Bullock; three brothers, Oliver, Ermin, and Ivo (Jack) Tegeler, and one sister, Leah Carpenter.
