Erwin O. Schulz age 85, of West Union formerly of Lawler, died on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at his home in West Union.
Erwin Oswald Herman Schulz was born on May 21, 1924 to Robert and Hattie (Voelker) Schulz in Chippewa Falls, WI. They moved to Boyd a few years later. Erv entered the U.S. Army on February 1, 1945 serving his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He received an honorable discharge in 1946.
He was united in marriage to Laura Young on January 21, 1950 in Preston, MN. Erv worked at John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo for several years before moving to Lawler in 1953 to farm, his lifetime dream. Together he and Laura raised their five children and farmed until 1986. During this time Erv also worked for the ASCS office for 20 years. He served 20 years on the Farmers Butter and Dairy Cooperative Board of Directors in Fredericksburg. Erv was a lifetime member of the Lawler American Legion Post 279. He was an active member of the Boyd Church until it closed and then became an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Erv loved spending time with his family and farming. As well as, going to coffee and visiting. He was especially fond of his Australian Blue Heeler dog, Jon-Pierre.
He is survived by his wife Laura of West Union, sons Roger (Marsha) Schulz of Oelwein, David (Sandy) Schulz of Durant, Dick (Randi) of Ankeny, daughters Sherry (Mike) Buttjer of Plainfield, Becky Schulz of Rochester, MN; nine grandchildren Vicki Schulz, Melissa Gesing, Sarah Costello, Mitch Schulz, Shawn Schulz, Kristin Schulz, Carissa Buttjer, Reece Buttjer, and Dalton Schulz; three great-grandchildren Braxton Reimer, Maxine Schulz, and Gabriel Costello; and two sisters Arlene (Willy) Dietz of Mason City, and Ruth Randall of Waterloo.
Erv was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Hattie Schulz, five brothers Albert, Otto, Walter, Paul, and John; two sisters Violet Pavelec, and Viola Joachim.
Burial will be in Boyd Cemetery at Boyd.Serving as casket bearers will be Shawn Schulz, Mitch Schulz, Reece Buttjer, Dalton Schulz, Braxton Schulz, Jeremiah Costello. Honorary casket bearers will be Gary Schulz, Randy Randall, Rick Joachim, Steve Schulz, Kerry Albrecht, Bobby Schulz, Ray Pavelec. Military rites will be performed by the Lawler American Legion Harold Redman Post # 279.
Visitation will be from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at the Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Reverend Kevin Frey officiating.
