Obituary for Nita Louise Geerts

Nita Louise Geerts age 54 of New Hampton, Iowa died Sunday morning, July 14, 2013, at her home, with her family by her side, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2013, at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph Center, New Hampton, with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed by Steve and her children. Lector for the service is Zo Bear. Presenting the offertory gifts will be Linda Burrichter and David Kerkove.

Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton at a later date. Pallbearers will be Bob and Kathy Beckman, Al& Joan Morris, Steve and Deb Dockendorf. Honorary pallbearers are members and spouses of the New Hampton Fire Department.

Friends may greet the family 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home in New Hampton with a 4:00 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continues beginning at 9:30 a.m. prior to the Mass Thursday at the church.

Nita Louise Geerts was born February 6, 1959, in Oelwein, Iowa, the daughter of Jack and Rosella (Tilkes) Kerkove. At an early age the Kerkoves moved to North Washington. Nita continued receiving her education in New Hampton, graduating in 1977. She also received her Associates Degree from N.I.C.C. in Calmar. On December 1, 1978 at Holy Family Parish – St. Joseph Center, she married Steve Geerts. To this union two children were born, Lacy and Adam.

Nita worked at Geerts Plumbing and Heating and later at Wilshire Jewelry. She also is a licensed Respiratory Therapist and worked at St. Joseph, now Mercy Hospital and Rotech Medical Supply. Nita also used her love of dogs to start, Firehouse Grooming. She operated that business out of her home, until June of 2011, retiring to spend more time with her family.

Nita was a member of the New Hampton Fire Department, the Hospital Auxiliary, Rescue Squad (ERT), Ambulance (EMT) and current New Hampton City Council Member.

Nita loved to spend time in her flower garden and supplied flowers to many. She had a passion for dogs and they always had a special place in her heart. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially golfing and traveling. She was very crafty and loved sewing, quilting and photography. Steve and Nita had a barn home in Lansing and time spent their always held special importance. She primarily loved her time spent with friends and family, especially her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 34 years,Steve; one son, Adam (Brenda) Geerts of New Hampton; one daughter, Lacy (Chris) Carolan of New Hampton; grandchildren, Alivia and Evan Geerts, Gene, Ella and Cara Carolan; her parents, Jack and Rosella Kerkove of North Washington; one brother, David (Toni) Kerkove of New Hampton; one sister, Linda (Al) Burrichter of New Hampton; four brothers-in-law, Ted (Ronnie) Geerts, Tom (Helen) Geerts, Mike (Katie) Geerts, John (Rita) Geerts, all of New Hampton; one sister-in-law, Margaret Harn of Waterloo; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Alex Geerts; her father and mother-in-law, Louis and Katherine Geerts; and brother-in-law, Bernard Geerts.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family for local charities and organizations.
