Obituary for Joseph Chandler

Joseph Merrill Chandler age 93 of Waverly, formerly of rural Nashua, died Saturday, August 24, 2013, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 28, 2013, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Nashua. Interment will be in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield.

Friends may greet the family an hour prior to the services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

If so desired, memorials may be made to Hospice or the family.

Joseph Merrill Chandler was born January 26, 1920, in Clarksville, Iowa, the son of William and Hally (Howard) Chandler. He attended Jackson Country School for his elementary education and attended the Nashua High School graduating in 1938. On August 9, 1941, in Kahoka, Missouri, he married Goldie Mae Coss. To this union six children were born. Joe and his wife Goldie farmed northeast of Horton for ten years before moving to their family farm of 38 years located southeast of Nashua. The couple retired in 1987 and moved to Waverly.

Joe continued to go back to the farm to help their son Richard with farm work. Joe’s greatest love was farming the land and raising cattle. His wife Goldie died on January 12, 2008 at the age of 83. Everyone who knew Joe knew of his great love of music and singing church and gospel songs. He would sing to anybody who would listen and request songs from him.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth (Linda) Chandler of Columbia Heights, Minnesota, Richard Chandler and Jeff Chandler both of Nashua; one daughter, Joanne (Darrell) Folkerts of Waverly; eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; one sister, Jane (Bill) Dudley of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one brother, Loren (Cecile) Chandler of Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, John Chandler; one daughter, Lois Jean Chandler; one grandson, Todd Folkerts.
