Virgil Anthony Mashek, age 70 of Lawler, Iowa died Friday, May 15, 2009, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center from complications following a stroke.

A Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholoic Church in Lawler, with Rev. Marvin Salz officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton with military honors by the Harold Redman Post #279 of Lawler. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Arens, Mike Arens, Anne Curran, Linda Arneson, Deb Best and Sarah Moore.

Friends may call 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Lawler. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at church on Tuesday.

Virgil was born December 20th, 1938, in New Hampton, IA to Adolph and Mae (Riehle) Mashek. He attended school in New Hampton, IA and was a member of the New Hampton High School graduating class of 1956. While still in high school, Virgil worked part-time at the New Hampton office of the Iowa Department of Transportation as an office assistant. After graduation he began working full-time with the Iowa DOT.

In 1961, Virgil was drafted into the Army and went to Fort Carson Colorado for basic training. After basic training he was sent to Fort Hood Texas where he served the remainder of his two years of service as mechanized infantry attached to the 1st Armored Division. During the Cuban Missile Crisis many military units, including the 1st Armored Division, were mobilized to Georgia. While mobilized to Georgia, Virgil's unit was reviewed by President Kennedy.

After being honorably discharged in 1963 he returned to Lawler and resumed his full-time employment with the New Hampton office of the Iowa DOT. He would continue working for the Iowa DOT for his entire career as a surveyor and then as an inspector. He retired after 44 years of service.

Virgil and family purchased and moved to a farm just west of Lawler in 1971. He greatly enjoyed maintaining and improving the acreage and doing all manner of gardening and landscaping.

Virgil was married on February 27th, 1965 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, IA and was later divorced.

He is survived by his sons Paul Mashek of Lawler, IA and David Mashek, of Naperville, IL; his grandchildren, Anthony Mashek and Danielle Mashek of Lawler; his brother, Donald (Marianne) Mashek of Lawler; sisters, Maggie (John) Sloan of Waucoma, Alice Rosenberg of Carson City, NV, and Theresa Mashek of CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Mae Mashek, two brothers, A.J. Mashek and Jerome Mashek; two sisters, Dorothy Flick and a sister in infancy.
