Died- Abraham Pittinger, aged 75 years, months, and 6 days.

Abraham Pittinger was born July 26, 1814, in Lycoming County Penn. He was married Sept. 6, 1838, to Miss Manirva Chapman, and it might be said of their marriage that it met with the highest approval of God as well as man, for it was not only the joining of two hands, but two hearts as well. Together they have traveled through life and enjoyed blessings and endured hardships that might have made many less strong in mind and body, pause and give up in despair. They have reared and cared for a large family, and two dying in infancy and two, Margaret Amelia and Frank dying in early womanhood and manhood.

The children yet living some being well known in this place and having lived near here all their life, are George, Lafayette, Henry, Fred , John, Rueben, and Samuel. All but two, Henry & Rueben was able to be at his home and funeral. The deceased emigrated to Illinois with four children in 1844 and from there to Chickasaw county, Iowa. Being one of the first settlers there, the family suffered many hardships the first few years.

Their first dwelling being a sod shanty but by honesty, integrity and toil he had accumulated much property and as fine a farm as is in Chickasaw county. Of him it maybe said no man ever went away from his door hungry. "The hungry he fed and the weary he rested and cared for." He was noted for his goodness and hospitality, and after meeting him once, one always looked forward with pleasure to the next meeting. No neighbor ever asked of him for aid or help without receiving it. He was united with the M.E. church in Ill. in 1858, since that time he has ever been steadfast and firm in his Christian faith, and looked forward with joy and gladness to the summous of the Lord to appear before the judgement bar of God. Death had no horror for him, he passed from this world into that other and better as a child falls to sleep.

For many years, life's thorny Path he trod, the conflict o'er, The victory won and Gone to dwell with God.
