Phillip Cooney, a pioneer resident of this county, died in St. Joseph's Hosptal Thursday, August 22, 1929, in the eighty sixth year of his age. His death was due to the infirmities incidental to old age.

The deceased was born in Ireland, August 1843, and came to this country with his parents about 1850. At first they lived in Safe Harbor, Maryland, and later moved to Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Here he was united in marriage to Catherine O'Donnell, January 11, 1870, and the following May they came to Lawler and made their home on a farm and that community was their home for fifty-four years.

The following relatives survive him, two brothers, Connor Cooney of Woonsocket, South Dakota and Peter Cooney of Chicago. Ten children were born to this union, nine of whom survive him. Peter J. Cooney and Mrs. Estella Peters of New Hampton, John, Louis and Earl Cooney and Mrs. Rita Sullivan of Lawler, Mrs Agnes Bald of Buffalo, Ia., Phillip E Cooney of Detroit, Mrs. Clair Brewer of Postville, Mrs. Regina Brady of Doughtery, Iowa, died in 1917.

The remains were taken to the Larkin and Knutson undertaking parlors, from there to the home of his son, Peter in New Hampton. Funeral services were held in St. Joseph's church in New Hampton on Saturday morning at nine o'clock. The Rev. J. V. Casey officiating. Burial took place in the Lawler cemetery, beside his wife.

As we write this finis to his useful and busy life it is with the knowledge that in many homes the message will fall on unwilling ears and that it will cause deep sorrow.

His life was so large a part of the pioneer life of this county for more than half a century that his passing causes more than usual sorrow.

Kind, loving, devout and devoted, toiling always for the promotion of all things good, he leaves a priceless heritage. The bereaved one are assured of the sincere sympathy of all.
