Gladys M. Birmingham, age 94 of Elma, IA died on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the Colonial Manor in Elma.

Gladys Margaret Birmingham was born on December 28, 1913 to George and Martha (Zimmer) Nosbisch on the family farm near North Washington. She attended St. Marys School in North Washington. Gladys worked as a house keeper for families in the area. She was united in marriage to Martin Edward Birmingham on October 10, 1933 at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington. After their marriage the couple made their home in New Hampton before moving to their farm near Lourdes in 1951. In 1966 they moved off the farm to Cresco. She worked as a nurses aide at Cresco Hospital for 18 years. She retired to be with her grandchildren and family.

Gladys enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking for her family. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Rosary Society and Our Evening Out Club.

Gladys is survived by her son Francis (Peggy) Nibaur of Elma, IA; four daughters Joan (Dan) Cole of Kansas City, MO, Nancy Haseltine of Estes Park, CO, Ellie Birmingham of Cape Coral, FL and Diane Birmingham of Iowa City, IA; one sister Mildred Briggs of New Hampton, IA; 16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Martin Edward in 1980; one daughter Gladys; three brothers Raymond Nosbisch, Harold Nosbisch and Francis Nosbisch; a sister Florene Murray; a grandson Christian Haseltine.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cresco.

Visitation will be from 9:00AM to 10:00AM on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00am, Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, IA with Father Ray Atwood as officiant. Cyrilla Haugen will be the organist.
