DR. S.S. TROY PASSES AWAY. Was Pioneer Physician of Chickasaw County - Died Sunday.

The many friends of Dr. S.S. Troy of Waterloo, for many years a resident of Nashua, where he was respected and loved by all who knew him, were grieved to learn that he had passed out into the great beyond on Sunday evening.

The Waterloo Courier gives an excellent write up of the life of this beloved friend and citizen, the substance of which was as follows:

"Last evening at 9 o'clock at the close of a beautiful Sabbath day, Dr. Samuel Smith Troy passed away at his home, 725 East Fourth street, death coming at the last peacefully after four years' illness of spinal trouble. Though he had been confined to the house for the past twelve weeks he seemed about as usual yesterday, was down stairs all day and had a light lunch with the family at 6 o'clock. At 7 he went up stairs to bed and at 7:45 he was taken suddenly worse. A physician was summoned hastily but the end was at hand and at 9 o'clock he fell asleep, quietly, peacefully, and from earthly sleep passed into the sleep which knows no awaking.

Death at the last was due to cerebral hemorrhage. Deceased suffered paralysis of one side of the vocal cords four years ago and since that time had failed steadily. He always took a great interest in children, especially in his youngest grandchild, Dorothy Wilbur, and used to wheel her about and escort her baby feet until she became able to run about unaided. Only yesterday afternoon she was teasing her grandfather and he responded playfully, apparently with his wonted interest. The entire day is a beautiful memory to the wife and relatives left and they take great comfort in the thought that he passed away peacefully.

"Deceased was born in Greenville, Pa., June 24, 1832. He completed a course in medicine at Allegheny college, Pa., and at the age of 22 came west, settling in Bradford, Iowa. Here he practiced for forty-two years, the only interruption being his departure for the civil war and a course at Rush Medical college, Chicago, immediately after.

During his long years as physician he practiced successfully in Chickasaw and adjoining counties and was regarded as one of the ablest physicians in that section of the state. Owing to impaired eyesight Dr. Troy was obliged to give up active practice ten years ago and the family moved to Waterloo. Four years ago he was obliged to give up all work and since then lived quietly, happy and contented, though knowing that end was not far off.

"Deceased served two years and a half during the civil war, enlisting in company H, 4th Iowa Cav. in the fall of 1861. He served first as a lieutenant and was then promoted to captain. He resigned before the close of the war and after a course in Rush medical college, resumed the practice of medicine in Bradford and Nashua. He was a member for many years of Geo. W.S. Dodge post, of Nashua and since coming to Waterloo of Robert Anderson post. For 35 years he was a faithful member of the Methodist church, attending services regularly and interesting himself always in the work of the church. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge.

"Deceased was married June 2, 1858, to Miss Emma C. Baldwin, of Chickasaw county, the marriage taking place at Bradford. Four children, two sons and two daughters, were born. The sons are Rev. H.W. Troy, of Fayette, presiding elder of the Decorah district, and W.B. Troy, of New York, secretary of a mining company. The daughters are Mrs. H.C. Wilbur, of Waterloo, and Miss Lena, who is at home with the wife and mother."

The funeral services were held in Waterloo yesterday afternoon at 2:30 and the remains are to be brought to Nashua this morning for burial. The cortege will be met at the depot by Geo. W.S. Dodge Post and escorted to Greenwood cemetery, where the casket will be opened and a short service held before interment.
