Lester Ernest Mahlstedt, 87 of Fredericksburg, Iowa, died Friday March 5, at New Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday March 8, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg with Pastor Ronnie Koch officiating. Janiece Kramer will be the organist with Jennifer Shide as vocalist singing, “The Old Rugged Cross“ and “Amazing Grace“. The congregation will sing, “In Know That My Redeemer Lives”.

Interment will be in the Richland Cemetery, rural Nashua with Zachary Mahlstedt, Brian Mahlstedt, Gary Lampe, Troy Mulholland, Bobby Zeien, David Wise, Kevin Saettele, Darryl Wiley and Marc Beahan as casketbearers. Honorary casketbearers are Marcus Mahlstedt and Edward Mahlstedt.

Friends called 3 - 6 Sunday March 7, at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, Fredericksburg. Further visitation was one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Lester Ernest Mahlstedt was born August 5, 1922, in Bremer County, the son of Edward and Marie (Wendt) Mahlstedt. He was educated in rural country schools in Chickasaw County.

On March 1, 1945, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Nashua, Lester was united in marriage to Marian Mellmann. To this union seven children were born. The couple farmed East of Fredericksburg for many years. Lester also hauled can milk for the Fredericksburg Farmers Butter and Dairy Creamery for eighteen years. Marian died on April 14, 2005, after 60 years of marriage.

Lester loved playing cards and spending time with his family.

He is survived by two sons, Lester Mahlstedt Jr. of Ionia and Larry Mahlstedt of Des Moines; four daughters, Elinor (Stu) Ferguson, Gunison, CO, Linda (Ken) Mulholland, Hanover, IL, Deloris (Steve) Ryan, LeGrand, and Betty (Bruce) Lampe of Ionia; fourteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; two brothers, Marcus (Linda) Mahlstedt of Nashua and Edward (Cathy) Mahlstedt of Nashua; one sister-in-law, Margaret Mahlstedt of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Mary Jane Mahlstedt; two brothers, Gilbert and Alvin; two sisters, Dorothy Thein, and Mary Jean Mahlstedt in infancy.
