Norma Jean Cecelia Wegner, 65 of New Hampton, Iowa, went to the Lord, Saturday Sept.5, at her home, surrounded by her family, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 9, at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Monsignor Carl Schmitt, Rev. Ivan Nienhaus, Rev. John Barnes, Rev. John Harpel, Rev. John Paisley and Rev. Mike Tauke officiating. The pall will be placed by her husband and four children. Ann Bennett will be the organist accompanying Joyce Shatek, cantor and the Holy Family Resurrection Choir. Tim Bodensteiner will be the lector. The offertory gifts will be presented by Norma’s children and grandchildren. Eucharist ministers will be Wilfred Kuennen, Dick Nienhaus, Cora Lynch and Marilyn Wegner.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton with Ken Lynch, Mike Schmitt, Ryan Wegner, Rick Kuennen, Matt Kuennen, Daryl Kuennen, Deano Kuennen and Randy Kuennen as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Norma’s six grandchildren; Zach Denner, Hannah Denner, Darian Wegner, Michael Denner, Sydney Wegner and Molly Wegner.

Visitation will be 3 - 8 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center Gathering Space, New Hampton where there will be a 3:30 p.m. Rosary and a 6:00 p.m. Scripture Service.

Norma was born November 10, 1943, the daughter of Nick and Frances (Schaufenbuel) Kuennen. She was raised on a farm near St. Lucas. Norma was a 1961 graduate of the St. Lucas High School. After graduation she moved to New Hampton and worked at the St. Joseph Hospital. While in New Hampton she met Gary Wegner and they were married May 1, 1965 at St. Lukes Catholic Church in St. Lucas. To this union four children were born.

In 1970, Gary and Norma bought Wegner Welding in New Hampton from John and Margaret Wegner. Norma worked various positions over the years at New Hampton Hospital and retired from the Radiology Department in 2005. In February of 2007, Norma and Gary sold their business, now New Hampton Metal Fab, to their sons, Jamie and Nick.

Norma was very involved in the community. She was active at St. Joseph Church and School, including the Parish Council, Rosary Society, Parish Housekeeping, St. Joe’s Fun Nights, Fall Festivals and many school projects involving her children.

She co-chaired and led many fund raising efforts for Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, American Cancer Society and Relay For Life. She also was an active member of the New Hampton Golf and County Club, including serving on the board.

Norma will be greatly missed and forever remain dearly loved.

Norma is survived by her husband of 44 years, Gary; four children, Janet of Cedar Rapids, Linda (Dave) Denner, Jamie (Trish Lechtenberg) Wegner and Nick, all of New Hampton; six grandchildren, Zach, Hannah and Michael Denner, Darian, Sydney and Molly Wegner; five brothers, Donald (Mary) Kuennen of St. Lucas, Wilfred (Pat) Kuennen of St. Lucas, Gaylord Kuennen of St. Lucas, Dennis (Jan) Kuennen of Cedar Rapids and Allan (Pam) Kuennen of Cedar Rapids; four sisters, Victoria Schmitt of West Union, Leona (Tim) Bodensteiner of Grinnell, Marilyn (Richard) Nienhaus of Ft. Atkinson and Cora Lee (Tom) Lynch of New Hampton; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Kuennen of Lawler.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Nick & Francis Kuennen; two brothers, Delbert & Richard Kuennen; sister, Rosalia Kuennen; and a granddaughter, Jenna Lynn Denner.

Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton is in charge of arrangements.
